Concerned about a child who may have been abused or exploited?
As adults, we are aware of so much that affects the lives of our children, and we want to keep them as safe as possible. If we notice changes that might mean that something is wrong, we need to know where we can voice our concerns, rather than feeling that we don’t know what to do or where to turn. There is help available. We can talk through your concerns, and help you take any necessary next steps.
If you have any concerns, no matter how small, it is helpful to trust your instinct and reach out for some guidance. If you have noticed any behavioural changes in children, or the adults around them, it can be helpful to explore why these changes may be happening. In some cases small subtle changes in a child's behaviour, such as becoming withdrawn or wetting the bed can be signs that your child is going through something. These behavioural changes may be due to many different reasons, so it can be helpful to encourage open communication in a safe environment for the child. Sometimes age-appropriate books can help open communication with children around difficult topics.
If a child does disclose abuse, it is important to remain calm and tell them that you believe them. It is very difficult for children to disclose abuse, and so if they do it is important they feel safe and fully supported. Give them the opportunity to share what has happened in their own words, and at their own pace. Remind them that this is not their fault. Bravehearts has further information to help support you when responding to disclosures of child abuse.
